For those who don't know, I worked in a hospital Postpartum unit for over 4 years. That means that I worked only with Mom and baby 2 or more hours after the delivery, which was on a separate floor. Needless to say I have a lot of experience with infants and the recovery process after the delivery. At the point that I got baby fever I started researching everything there was to know about pregnancy. It fascinated me and I couldn't get enough information.
I could never say that I knew everything about pregnancy (can anyone ever really say that?), but I knew a lot. Up until this week, none of my symptoms surprised or scared me because I knew that it was just part of pregnancy. For example, I started feeling ligament pain/stretching very early on, but I knew exactly what it was so it didn't scare me.
On Monday I had the first symptom that I was totally baffled by and couldn't explain. I didn't freak out, but I was a little more worried than usual. Thankfully I had an appointment with my Midwife already scheduled for yesterday so I knew I could ask her.
I was sitting on the couch Monday night with Phil and all of the sudden I felt what I called "lightning crotch." I heard a pregnant woman use that term, but she was in her 3rd trimester. It felt like a little zing, that seemed to start at my cervix and radiate up. It wasn't really painful, but it was definitely weird. The next morning I woke up and was still having it. Sometimes it was every few minutes and sometimes it was every 10 minutes.
For the first time, I had no idea what was going on. I knew that something similar to this is normal during the end of the pregnancy from the baby's head being down there and possibly hitting a nerve, but my baby is only the size of an avocado! I didn't think that could happen yet. Then as the day went on I started getting this other weird pain. It felt kinda like a tightening or twinge of pain right at my cervix but this one didn't zing and it stayed in one spot.
TMI time. So before I went to my appointment I had to make a BM really bad. Oh the things that you get excited for when your pregnant. Like I've said before, I haven't gotten to the point where I've been constipated but things move sooooo slloowwww. Needless to say, I was thrilled to have a successful BM. Strangely enough, those little lightnings almost disappeared after that.
I told my Midwife about it all still and she wasn't concerned. Obviously it had to do with being "backed up," and she said she wouldn't be worried unless there was bleeding or cramping. The lightnings are completely gone now and I still get the other cervix pain once in a while. I have a liquid Calcium-Magnesium that I take to stay regular but I had stopped taking it the last week or two. So now I will be back on that to keep things moving so that doesn't happen again.
Been feeling more movement in the last few days. Nothing consistent. Yesterday I didn't feel anything but today I've felt one movement. We also got to hear the heartbeat at our appointment yesterday.
Maybe it's because this is my first kid but I still find it hard to really comprehend that there is a baby in there. Obviously I know there is, but I still have a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that this is all really happening. I'm at the point where sometimes I really do look pregnant but sometimes I just look chubby. Feeling the baby move and hearing the heartbeat helps make it undeniable and helps my mind catch up to reality.
